This project presented a unique opportunity to transform a steep and challenging slope in Sykesville, MD into a stunning, naturalistic landscape featuring a custom-built waterfall. The client’s vision called for a functional yet visually striking hillside retreat that would integrate hardscape elements, lush plantings, and water features—all to be completed before an early April deadline.
One of the first major challenges we faced was the condition of the existing soil. The entire slope required excavation and removal of unsuitable native soil, which was then replaced with engineered planting soil to support healthy root development and long-term plant success. The steep grade of the hill added to the complexity, necessitating the hoisting and careful placement of large boulders and stone materials using specialized equipment and strategic planning.
Construction took place during the winter months, which introduced additional logistical hurdles including cold temperatures, limited daylight, and weather-related delays. Despite these challenges, our team remained on schedule to meet the client’s springtime deadline.
The hardscape elements, particularly the retaining walls, were crafted using hand-selected local stone. These materials were carefully chosen for both their structural reliability and their ability to blend seamlessly into the natural environment. The walls were constructed by skilled and experienced masons, who integrated the stonework with large natural boulders in an artistic and highly skilled manner—creating a cohesive and timeless look that anchors the hillside and elevates the overall design.
A key feature of the project is the multi-tiered waterfall system. Proper pump and pipe sizing was critical to ensure consistent water flow from the pond at the base of the hill to the top of the cascade and back down again—creating both visual appeal and the tranquil sound of moving water. The final result is a beautifully integrated water feature that enhances the natural aesthetic of the space.
To ensure the landscape remains vibrant year-round, the property receives seasonal annual plantings and consistent landscape maintenance services. This ongoing care helps preserve the integrity of the design and allows the project to continue looking its best throughout the seasons.
