Four ways to rock your garden

Want to give your garden a little flair? Utilizing organic materials such as rocks, boulders and pebbles may be just the thing to enhance the natural beauty surrounding your abode.

Let a river run through it.

While some might hope for an actual river in their yard, we’re speaking about a river of rocks. River bed rock gardens will not only be eye catching, but low maintenance as well. Sculpt your river bed of rocks to gently curve through a natural landscape of native plants or succulents. Because rocks absorb and retain a great deal of heat, it’s important to use heat tolerant plants near this type of terrain. Shrubs such as ornamental grasses and azaleas grow well in this type of river rock environment.

Give your landscaping some edge.

Want to battle weeds and make your garden stand out? Consider trimming your garden with rustic rocks or stone – the perfect edge to your gardening bed. Flagstone is one way to add a rustic look that will coordinate with your plants. River rock can also be used as garden edging.

Go boulder.

While stones to edge your garden may be great, a few strategically placed larger rocks or boulders can help stabilize the look. The perfectly placed boulder can serve as a focal point of a garden, adding height and texture to the landscape.

Step this way.

Have a garden or shrubbery alongside your house? A stone path along the side of the house will not only be a practical means for foot traffic, but is also a natural way to enhance the landscape. Because darker rocks tend to absorb more heat, it’s best to go with a lighter color. Also make sure the stone has some texture too it so it’s not too slippery when wet.
